Best Houston Area Brewery Date Spots

by | Jun 17, 2021

If you’re looking for a brewery to take your date to, Houston has an array of options. Leo and I love exploring all Houston has to offer, but it’s hard to narrow down the best date spots. While we love many Houston breweries, the ones on this list stood out to us as memorable dates for various reasons. From the food and beverages they offer to the ambiance, these breweries have something special to make your evening (or morning, or afternoon – a date doesn’t have to be at night, right?) one to remember.

Local Group Brewing

Local Group Brewing is cool. The design inside is cool, their logo is cool, the beer is cool, and the people are cool. Their burger is one of the best burgers I’ve had, and, with their cool logo emblazoned on the bun, it is Instagram-ready. They have an extensive menu, and they have some wines available. It’s a great dinner date. Or check out their happy hour every Wednesday and Thursday from 4 pm – 7 pm when they offer half off all beer and wine flights, select beers, and small bites.  To top it off, Local Group has a phenomenal view of downtown.

Platypus Brewing

Platypus Brewing is beautifully designed, is unique, and has a great kitchen. They blend Texan and Australian flavors and decor. Try their Red Ale, The Ranga. It’s delicious, and you can’t find that style in many places. They also have wine and cider available, and their menu has vegetarian, gluten-free, and Paleo options. I especially love their ambiance. The blend of Texas and Australia is very cool, and what’s cuter than a platypus?

True Anomaly Brewing Company

True Anomaly has a very hip vibe. The inside is shiny and has a variety of seating options. True to their name, they are not your ordinary brewery. According to their website, they specialize in “Wild and Sour Ales, Old World styles rooted in Belgian, French, and German traditions, as well as, Hop-forward, Experimental Ales.” Also true to their name, many of their beers have space-related names. They also serve ciders and wines. True Anomaly does not have a kitchen, but they sometimes have food trucks. There are also nearby restaurants that you can order from or visit. We suggest the burgers from Rodeo Goat. While in the area, you could also hit up 8th Wonder Brewery

I took one of my favorite pictures of Leo at True Anomaly. We had fun hanging out and playing games.

Holler Brewing Company

Holler has a very clean look with beautiful hop cone lighting. They also have a pretty fabulous patio. They don’t have a kitchen, but they frequently have a food truck, most often it’s Tacos Bomberos. Try Holler’s Looyah Milk Stout, and, if they have it, their ESB, a 2017 GABF (Great American Beer Festival) bronze medal winner. Both are delicious! Then, go check out the amazing view of Houston from Buffalo Bayou Brewing across the street.

Walking Stick Brewing Company

Walking Stick Brewing is gorgeous! They have an expansive, beautiful outdoor area, and a stunning inside area decorated with romantic flowers on each table. The inside is a covered area open to the outdoors. The beers are beautiful works of art too. I suggest you order a flight. They come in cute glasses, and isn’t it great to try a little bit of everything? Plus, sharing a flight can be a fun date activity. My favorite of our flight was the Humboldt Hazy IPA. They also serve some wines if you’re not in the mood for beer. In the mornings, they have their own kitchen called Twiggy’s that serves bagel sandwiches. In the afternoons and evenings, they have rotating food trucks. If you want to make it a family date, the space is great for children and dogs. They even have a playground for the kids. Leo and I brought our dog, Sammy, and some games and had a great time hanging outdoors.

City Orchard

City Orchard has a beautiful atmosphere, inside and out, and friendly service. They produce fantastic ciders. You need to try Lavendar Royale. It’s infused with Hill Country lavender and Texas honey. It is unique and lovely! I also loved Silver Tip and Mr. Green. City Orchard also brews great beer, and they have a seltzer and some unique wines available. They have a kitchen and currently have a limited menu that offers some tasty options. We enjoyed the City Burger. What can I say? We love burgers! When we were there, there was live music playing in their spacious outdoor area. Visit their Facebook to find out when they have live music and who’s playing. Great people, excellent space, and a variety of options make City Orchard a great place to impress a date.

Southern Yankee

Southern Yankee gets my vote as the most hospitable brewery in Houston. They served us our beers at our table and were very friendly and welcoming. If you’re hungry, they serve outstanding pizza and wings. And, of course, they brew delicious beers. I really enjoyed a fruited sour they had on tap. I also liked the Work Like a Captain IPA and the Swizzle Burst NEIPA. The ¿Qué Pablo? Lager is a must-try! If you or your date are not feeling like having beer, they have cider and some crowd-pleasing wines. Southern Yankee has indoor and outside seating. It’s a great place to hang out, eat, and play some games.

Saint Arnold Brewing Company

Saint Arnold holds a special place in our hearts. On our first date, we played poker and drank Fancy Lawnmower. So when we got married, we served Fancy Lawnmower at our reception. If you’ve never been to Saint Arnold, you need to go. It’s the grandfather of Houston breweries. It’s the oldest Texas craft brewery. And it’s magnificent. The Beer Garden and Restaurant features beautiful paintings by local artists, and the whole place is stunning. Our favorite beers are Lawnmower (of course), H-Town Pils, and Double Down. They also make really good cider and seltzer, and they have a few wines on their menu. Their menu features appetizers, pizza, salads, and sandwiches. I suggest trying the Raclette Mac & Cheese. Most of the seating is covered and the servers are friendly and knowledgeable. Every Houstonian and visitor needs to experience Saint Arnold.
